Browser games are easy to start and just as easy to leave running in the background of a week. These notes apply to every game on the shortlist.

A current version of any major browser will run all four games. If a map refuses to load, update the browser before anything else. On a phone, turn the screen sideways for the strategy maps.

Your game account

• Only type account details on the game's own website, after checking the domain.
• Use a different secret phrase for every game.
• Ignore chat messages that offer free premium currency in exchange for your account. Real game staff never ask for it.
• Turn on two-factor protection where a game offers it.

Spending

Every game here sells optional extras. Set a monthly figure in dollars before the first purchase and stick to it. On shared or kids' devices, switch on purchase approval in the device settings.

Time

Mute the game's notifications. Decide when a session ends before it starts. If you notice a game creeping into work hours or the middle of the night, take a week off and see how it feels; your castle will still be standing.

Age

Each game sets its own minimum age in its terms. Check it on the game's site before a younger player signs on.
